First Quarter - 2024

FHSC Board Meetings

FHSC Business

January 2024: The FHSC General Meeting was held at Desert Canyon Grill, where all previous 2023 board members were voted and confirmed for 2024. Continuity among the team has proven valuable to planning and acting on longer-term goals.  A new board position of “Student Ambassador” was created and filled by FHHS student exchange participant Eli Van Beek. Upgrades to the FHSC website also began in earnest during this time. Proposed enhancements will streamline and automate how we manage the important connections we share with our cherished members and subscribers.

Humanitarian Aid

January 2024: Sister Cities officially kick-started its new fundraising campaign to support Ataco, El Salvador. Changes were made to the website to include a new donation platform for Ataco, along with plans for fundraising events throughout the coming year. Our efforts for 2024 will help feed elderly residents in Ataco with critically needed, nutritious food packages.

February 2024: Ataco Chair Byron Roman helped conceive, plan, and organize a fundraising event to support Sister City Ataco. This cherished community struggles to prevent food insecurities for many of its senior citizens. FHSC has stood with Ataco, helping them financially through the kindness and generosity of Fountain Hills residents and business partners. The fundraising event held by FHSC was hosted by Mountain View Kitchen and was a remarkable success. Guest speakers associated with past and present visits to Ataco shared their personal and heartwarming experiences. A highlight was being treated to a live cooking demonstration of a favorite item of El Salvadoran cuisine. The event raised more than $3,500 that will be put to work in our “Meals for Elders” campaign to support Ataco for 2024.

March 2024: Jennifer with Mountain View Kitchen created a “Round-Up” program in support of our Ataco fundraising campaign. Patrons were asked to round up their meal checks to support FHSC. By the close of the program, Jennifer and her team donated $250 to FHSC. Thanks to all the Mountain View Kitchen patrons who donated to our cause. We truly have a thoughtful and generous community.

Culture and Arts

January 2024: FHSC attended the FH Volunteer Expo at the FH Community Center with a display booth. We fielded many questions from the interested crowd, who wanted to know more about what we do. Most knew of the road signs that display our partner cities, but few knew exactly how we interact with them. The opportunity gave us a clue how to improve the community’s understanding of our purpose (more about that later).

March 2024: FHSC attended the Fountain Hills Day celebration along the Avenue of the Fountain. The information learned during the Volunteer Expo in January influenced our decision to create a new banner for public event displays. The banner was the combined work of many inputs from the team and was on display for the first time at Fountain Hills Day. The new banner answered all the questions any visitor to the booth could ask about the Sister Cities process. The volunteer team, the booth arrangement, and the new banner helped secure FHSC with the award for Best Philanthropic Booth.

Students and Educators

March 2024: The FH Sister Cities Board approved a $1,000 donation to be given to the local Fountain Hills Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The money helped to support the PTO in many ways, most notably a staff appreciation picnic. Connections like the one we share with the PTO help to solidify the commitment FHSC has to the youth and teachers of Fountain Hills. Education (especially about citizen diplomacy) is a cornerstone of all the good things FHSC represents.

February 2024: FH Sister Cities members joined local art historian Paola Vojnovic on a spectacular trip to historic Venice, Italy.  Participants attended the much-anticipated Carnevale Celebration and toured famous public and private points of interest.
