January 2023, The FHSC Annual General Meeting was held on January 9th at Mountainview Kitchen. About thirty guests and members participated and enjoyed a light dinner and social hour. The new 2023 board of directors was voted and confirmed. We gave thanks to Honorary Consul to El Salvador, Enrique Melendez, who served for many years in the role of Ataco chair for FHSC, and recently announced his retirement.
February 2023, The new Ataco chair Byron Roman was named along with new Membership co-chairs Sascha and Rosa Janssen. Later in the month, a call to the public was made for ideas for the next Sister City for FHSC, to replace Kasterlee Belgium. Several suggestions were presented that include cities in Italy, Asia, Mexico, Canada, India and France. A sub-committee will be established to create consistent and meaningful criteria for the new city selection process. Carol Carroll, former FH Sister Cities President, and current board member, was named to the
prestigious Lower Verde River Valley Hall of Fame sponsored by the Fountain Hills-Alan Cruickshank Museum, for her exemplary work in our community. We congratulate Carol for this incredible accomplishment and thank her for her tireless dedication.
March 2023, Fountain Hills Sister Cities has been nominated as “non-profit of the year” in the annual Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce May Gala. We hope that our friends and members kindly remember to vote here for Sister Cities so that our organization can be recognized for our efforts in the community. There will be a Masquerade Gala on May 19 from 6-9pm at We-Ko-Pa resort where the winners will be announced.
March 2023, FHSC has collected an additional $4000 in donations (on top of $40,000 in 2022) for our Ukraine Refugee Program to support our sister city Zamosc Poland who is providing critical services during this on-going humanitarian crisis. The donations have certainly slowed for 2023, but we encourage our community to not lose sight of the suffering that continues every day as the war in Ukraine drags on. One of our more remarkable community members, Mark Leiber, once again travelled to, and spent time volunteering on the ground in Poland near the border of Ukraine, helping refugees find their way to safety. This was his third such trip, and from what we hear, there are more trips planned. We salute Mark’s courage and dedication to this very worthy cause.
