Fountain Hills Sister Cities Raises $1,000 Toward "Meals For Elders" Humanitarian Relief Campaign for Ataco, El Salvador
On Wednesday, June 26, The Hispanic Rotary Club of Phoenix hosted a Pupusa fundraising dinner at El Salvadoreño Restaurant on Central and Dunlap in Phoenix. The event saw enthusiastic participation from members of Fountain Hills Sister Cities (FHSC), NAHREP Southeast Phoenix, and the local community.
A much-anticipated main dish for the night was pupusas, the traditional dish of El Salvador. Attendees enjoyed this beloved staple, which added a touch of authentic Salvadoran culture to the event.
The primary goal of the evening was to raise funds for FHSC’s Sister City of Ataco, El Salvador, specifically for the Meals for Elders program, which provides basic food items to seniors in need. However, the event took on an even greater significance due to recent events in Ataco.
Disastrous Flooding in Ataco Creates Urgent Need
An unusual monsoon storm recently struck Ataco, causing devastating floods, landslides, and power outages. These natural disasters have severely impacted the community, leading to substantial crop loss, damage to housing, and disruption of local jobs. As a result, the need for additional funds has become more pressing to help the community recover and rebuild.
Funds Raised So Far Are Already Being Put to Use
Funds raised from the event will go directly to supporting the Meals for Elders program, ensuring that seniors in Ataco receive the basic food items they need. Additionally, the contributions will aid in broader recovery efforts to address the extensive damage caused by the storm.
